COMMENTARY

Roofing Today Editor, Dr Claire Griffiths, comments on the 2025 Top 40.

In the topmost position of Roofing Today’s Top 40, congratulations go once again to CA Group, which ranks number one for a third consecutive year.

The headline for the UK roofing and cladding industry is that turnover is flatlining. Overall, the 2025 Roofing Today Top 40 companies achieved a total turnover of £1.2 billion – slightly down on last year (£1.3bn) – and accounting for around 17% of the £7.2 billion activity value expected of the UK roofing and cladding sector in 2025.

Average turnover values for our Top 40 have fallen by -7% on last year’s Top 40, failing to keep pace with the period’s inflation rate of 3.7%. Indeed, most businesses saw a decrease in turnover (21 out of our 40) on the previous year’s.

Yet, set against this, is that, overall, pre-tax profits have improved, amounting to £74 million, up on last year’s by a very healthy 12%. As one contractor commented: “We have consolidated our activity after the post-pandemic madness. Our pace has slowed, it’s quality over quantity and our profits haven’t changed that much. We prefer it.”

Out of all the Top 40, only 2 companies made a pre-tax loss, compared to last year’s 3. Nevertheless, there are 11 businesses with shrinking pre-tax profits, slightly up on last year’s 9.

One to Watch

Notable on this year’s list are some well-known roofing sector names. Celebrating 60 years, London and South East-based A & E Elkins is a prominent performer, building on its turnover gains in recent years and continuing its climb up the rankings to 2nd place.

Also conspicuous this year is Ayrshire-headquartered Hugh LS McConnell which continues its race up the rankings from 12th last year to the current 4th position. Mentioned as one to watch in last year’s analysis, the company reports entering its FY25 with “our highest ever recorded percentage of secured and expected orders.”

Rising star, Central Roofing and Building, is another whose rising ranking reflects impressive growth and healthy profits. The Hereford-headquartered business foresees further growth opportunities, building on new branches and its existing client base with maintenance agreements, saying “We believe we are strongly positioned to proceed with our growth plans.”

Average Profit Margin

In line with the trend, average profit margin amongst our Top 40 has improved slightly at 6.50% up on last year’s 5.45%, and with a median figure of 6.95%.

Overall, the number of employees has fallen again in our Top 40 this year to 3,102, a 4.7% decrease on the previous year. While the difficulties of hiring skilled operatives in the sector may account for some of this, many companies continue increasing their subcontractor use in response to the uncertain market.

As last year’s Top 40 was published, we were looking forward to the new government’s promised surge in housebuilding – so vital to our sector. One year on, and optimism is waning. Yet, most forecasts expect growth for UK construction over the next 3 years, and we look forward to reflecting the fruits of that in 2026’s Roofing Today Top 40.
