Final Chapter for Historic Grade II Library Restoration

Collyweston slate installed on Kettering Library's new roof

The project to replace the roof on the historic Grade II Kettering Library and Alfred East Gallery is nearing completion.

On Monday 11 May, the scaffolding and tent covering the site will start to be removed, revealing the building’s new Collyweston roof and refurbished cupola.

Built in the Early Renaissance style over 120 years ago, the library is one of Kettering’s most historic buildings.

Local contractors Messenger first started work in April 2025, after a survey of the roof uncovered extensive damage caused by three years’ worth of leaks.

The old roof was stripped in its entirety, allowing for detailed surveys of the timbers to take place, before being replaced with a mixture of new and reclaimed Collyweston slate. In amongst the new tiles are a number decorated by the local community as part of a “tag a tile” event, allowing them to become part of history. A video of some of the tiles being installed can be seen on Facebook.

Final Chapter

Cllr Greg Wilcox commented: “This is an exciting milestone for the site – the final chapter in the project. For the first time in nearly a year, residents of Kettering and further afield will be able to see the library roof and the excellent work that has been completed on site.

“Once the scaffolding has come down, there will be some final touches to be undertaken. But we are so nearly there and almost ready to welcome residents back through the original library doors.”
