But how long it actually lasts isn’t just down to the metal itself. It’s also about how well that metal has been protected from rust, weather and everyday knocks. Bits like flashings, trims, brackets, gutters and copings are usually finished before they ever turn up on site. That might mean wet paint, galvanising, or powder coating, depending on what the part is, what it’s made of, and what sort of weather it’ll be living in. Why These Components Need Protecting at All Roofs cop a lot. Rain, condensation, hot days followed by cold nights, pollution in the air, salt if you’re anywhere near the coast, all of it chips away at bare metal over time. Some parts have it worse than others simply because of where they sit. Edge trims, gutters, flashings and any brackets left exposed go through constant wetting and drying, while anything near a joint or a drainage point can stay damp for long stretches. Once corrosion gets a foothold, it doesn’t just look bad; it starts eating away underneath the surface, often before you’d even notice from the outside. That’s why protection needs thinking about at the manufacturing stage, not tacked on as an afterthought once the roof’s already up. Getting the Surface Right First No coating, however good, will do its job properly on a surface that hasn’t been prepped properly. Metal parts often arrive covered in oil, grease, dust, fingerprints or leftover residue from being fabricated. Any of that can stop a coating sticking properly, leaving thin patches that fail early. Depending on the metal and the coating being used, prep might involve degreasing, washing down, abrasive blasting or a chemical treatment, basically whatever gets the surface clean and stable enough for the coating to bond evenly. How the part was fabricated matters too. Sharp edges, weld spatter and rough patches all make it harder to get an even coat, so sorting these out beforehand saves problems further down the line. The Coating as a Barrier At its core, a protective coating works by keeping moisture and oxygen away from the metal underneath. Cut off that contact and corrosion slows right down. How well that barrier holds up depends on things like how well it’s stuck to the metal, how thick it is, whether it’s applied evenly, and how well it copes with whatever the weather throws at it. For anything sitting outside, that means standing up to UV, rain, frost and constant temperature swings. Add sea air or industrial pollution into the mix and the coating’s got even more to contend with. So it makes sense that the coating chosen should suit where the component is actually going, rather than using the same finish everywhere regardless. Getting the Thickness Right Thickness matters more than people might expect. Too thin, and there’s not enough protection, especially around corners and edges where coatings naturally thin out. Uneven application leaves weak spots where rust can start. But more isn’t automatically better either. Piling on too much coating can cause its own issues, affecting how it looks or how well it cures. Manufacturers often check thickness as part of quality control, just to make sure everything’s landing where it should. This matters even more when producing lots of similar parts, brackets or trims, say, where you don’t want one batch turning out differently from the next. Curing Takes Time Too Applying the coating is only half the job. Most finishes need proper drying or curing before they’re actually doing what they’re meant to. Get the temperature or timing wrong and the coating won’t perform as it should, sometimes staying softer than it ought to, sometimes struggling with the heat used to cure it. Heavier metal takes longer to warm through than thin sheet, so that needs factoring in during heated curing. Keeping an eye on these conditions helps avoid coatings that fail earlier than they should. Design Plays a Part Too How a component is shaped affects how easy it is to protect properly. Tight folds, narrow gaps and awkward recesses are harder to coat evenly, and they’re also where water and debris tend to collect once the part’s installed. Thoughtful design allows for drainage and avoids creating spots where moisture just sits. Edges and contact points deserve a bit of extra thought too, since they tend to take the most knocks during handling and installation. Keeping the Finish Safe on Its Way There Even a great coating can get damaged before it’s fitted. Components get stacked, packed, moved and handled repeatedly before they reach the roof, and all that contact can scratch or chip the surface. Careful packing helps here, as does keeping parts dry; standing water or trapped condensation in packaging can undo a lot of good work before installation even starts. Checking Before It Leaves the Factory A last look-over before dispatch catches problems while they’re still easy to fix, missed spots, contamination, scratches, patchy coverage. Thickness gets checked too, where needed. Spotting the same issue cropping up again and again is often a sign something in the process, prep, application, curing or handling, needs a closer look. It All Adds Up No single step can make up for weak points elsewhere. A brilliant coating won’t save a badly prepped surface, and good prep can still be undone by rough handling in transit. Treating protection as something that runs through the whole process, from material choice through to installation, is really what keeps metal roofing performing well for years to come.
