More than 250,000 UK homes have spray foam insulation, which can lead to trapped moisture when incorrectly installed, and may cause damp, mould and timber decay. The market is currently unregulated, which can leave homeowners vulnerable to unscrupulous traders who exploit the lack of oversight. While spray foam insulation can work well when properly applied, it is difficult and expensive to remove. It can become a barrier to homeowners being able to sell their property, as prospective buyers struggle to obtain a mortgage. Spray Foam Scams Many householders who have had spray foam insulation installed also report being targeted by cold callers pressuring them to remove it, or legal firms pursuing cases of mis-selling. James Berry, at the PCA, said: “We’ve had reports of homeowners being told they are on a ‘national database’ of properties that are likely to lose value if the insulation is not removed. “In some cases, vulnerable customers, including pensioners, have been lulled into a false sense of security with so-called ‘surveyors’ presenting fake ID that includes the PCA logo, even though at present, our members do not offer spray foam insulation removal services. “However, the PCA has a long-standing role in supporting customers who need to remove this type of insulation, having already developed inspection protocols and consumer guidance. “The introduction of the PCA Spray Foam Assessor Register has improved consistency in the assessment of installations and provided greater confidence for homeowners, lenders and property professionals in finding a professional they can trust.” Spray Foam Removal The PCA aims to support the sector as increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing or being advised to remove spray foam insulation, which has led to more contractors specialising in its removal. By creating a membership for these contractors, PCA can instigate competency requirements, independent auditing, compliance monitoring, technical guidance, training and representation. James Berry added: “The PCA is actively collaborating with contractors, government, lenders and the wider property sector to establish a recognised framework that raises standards and supports responsible business. “The objective is not to regulate the market, but to provide an independently recognised benchmark that supports higher standards, helps consumers make informed choices and enables reputable contractors to demonstrate their commitment to competence and professionalism. “We can provide a new level of consumer protection by making it easier for homeowners and property professionals to identify contractors who meet recognised standards, while helping to reduce poor practice and build long term confidence into the spray foam removal sector.” To ensure any new framework supports the needs of contractors, homeowners and mortgage lenders, the PCA is holding a consultation on the proposals, starting with a stakeholder meeting in September. >> Read more about spray foam insulation in the news Previous article Second Round of Multi Million Heritage Funding OpensNext article Govt Clamps Down on Cowboy Builders with Approved Scheme Share article You may also like View all News Industry News +1 17 September 2026 First Environmental Delivery Plan with 15,000 New Norfolk Homes Published Heritage Roofing +2 17 September 2026 Heritage and Traditional Skills Plan Launching Today Industry News +1 16 September 2026 Barrett Redrow Housebuilding Year Results Remain Subdued Check out the latest issue 126 September-October 2026 View Now Past Issues Get in Touch Sign Up to Roofing Today Stay up to date with all of the latest news from Roofing Today by signing up to our weekly Bulletins… Sign Up Today Get in Touch
