COMMENTARY

Here, Roofing Today’s editor, Dr Claire Griffiths comments on this year’s list.

Congratulations go to CA Group which retains the prime position for the fourth consecutive year.

After last year’s Top 40 recorded virtually no overall growth, this year combined turnover has increased by a welcome 5.2%, rising to £1,264,026,450. Together, the Top 40 now account for around 16% of the UK roofing sector’s estimated £7.3 billion annual revenue, slightly outperforming the 5.0% average business growth estimated for UK roofing firms over the 2020–2025 period.

Looked at another way, the increase in average turnover has comfortably exceeded the period’s 3.8% inflation rate, meaning the Top 40 has achieved genuine real-terms growth.

Striking Profitability

Perhaps the most striking feature of this year’s rankings, however, is profitability. Total pre-tax profit has surged by an impressive 41%, suggesting that, with order books remaining relatively stable, contractors have concentrated on improving productivity, efficiency and cost control. The result is clearly reflected in their bottom lines.

For the first time ever in the Roofing Today Top 40, and fabulous news for the sector, every company on the list has reported a profit. While profits have shrunk for 12 of our Top 40, all have managed to stay firmly in the black. Average pre-tax profit margin also strengthened significantly, rising from 6.4% last year to a healthy 8.4%.

Do More with the Same

The industry’s apparent mantra, to “do more with the same”, is equally evident in employment figures. Collectively, the Top 40 employ 3,123 people—just 21 more employees than last year—suggesting gains in productivity rather than workforce expansion.

This year’s rankings have also seen unprecedented dynamism, with eight new companies entering the Top 40. While the upper half of the table remains relatively stable, the greatest movement is among businesses with turnovers below £30 million. Here, 16 companies have slipped down the rankings, while only 10 have climbed. Among the strongest performers are Steadfast, Yorkshire Sheeting and Industrial Construction, all of which have benefited from growth in the comparatively resilient industrial sector.

One notable absentee is FK Facades, following its move into administration, although parent company FK Group continues to trade. Meanwhile last year’s second-place (A&E) Elkins has extended its financial period making its accounts unavailable for the list, as was Central Roofing and Building’s (ranked 12th last year). This last, together with other top performers, M&J Group (at 4th) and Inspire Contract Services (at 25th) may face more challenging times ahead having just been named as suspects in the CMA’s school bid-rigging investigation.

Sound Financial Health

Although the past 12 months failed to deliver the promised housebuilding boom, overall, the picture painted by the Roofing Today Top 40 2026 is one of a sector in sound financial health. Rising turnover, stronger profitability and apparent productivity improvements provide encouraging signs as the industry enters a tougher economic climate this year and uncertain conditions ahead. Let’s hope the new Premier will re-commit to housebuilding and that global economic headwinds rescind.
