New Electronic Integrity Testing Guidance Published

A NEW technical publication, Guidance Note 18: Electronic Integrity Testing of Liquid Applied Membranes, has been released by the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA).

Electronic Integrity Testing (EIT) is a non-invasive method used to detect defects in waterproofing membranes by applying an electrical current across the surface to identify potential leaks. This new guidance offers industry-wide best practice on how to undertake the testing safely and accurately, with specific guidance on hot melt and cold-applied liquid waterproofing membranes.

During the last 30 years, EIT has become the recognised standard for assessing the on-site integrity of waterproofing systems used on flat roofs and other structural projects. These include both hot melt and cold-applied liquid-applied systems, as well as reinforced bitumen and single ply membranes.

Guidance Note 18 explains the methodologies for EIT, including when tests should be carried out, how to prepare surfaces, testing limitations, and the importance of collaboration with system manufacturers. It aims to ensure all stakeholders, including contractors, clients, and specifiers, can verify watertightness with confidence.

New Electronic Integrity Testing Guidance

The new LRWA Guidance Note has been developed in partnership with the Roofing and Waterproofing Test Association (RAWTA), an organisation comprising independent, third-party On-Site Test House (OSTH) companies. RAWTA members operate independently of waterproofing system manufacturers and contractors, ensuring impartiality in testing and certification.

Mike Bradbury, Technical Guidance Manager at the LRWA and lead on the document, said: “With the increase in demand for liquid-applied systems and the crucial role that EIT plays in verifying waterproofing performance, the industry needed clear, standardised guidance on when and how to use these methods effectively.

“This document brings much-needed clarity and consistency to testing procedures, helping to ensure both accuracy and compliance across the supply chain.”
