ITN Business Interviews NFRC on Roofing Apprenticeships

THE NATIONAL Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) has been interviewed by ITN Business about roofing apprenticeships.

Head of Careers, Ruth Scarrott was put under the TV spotlight when she spoke to ITN Business about spreading the word to young people, their parents and influencers, and people of all ages, looking to begin a rewarding career in roofing.

The interview comes as part of National Apprenticeship Week this week (5-11 February) in England, with Scottish Apprenticeship Week in 4-8 March. Both initiatives highlight the apprenticeship and career progression opportunities available across numerous sectors and within the multimillion-pound roofing industry.

Roofing Apprenticeships

Reporter Joanna Simpson interviewed Ruth as part of the ITN Business ‘Apprenticeships: Pathway to Success’ news-style programme, to delve into the opportunities within the roofing industry. Together, they explore the importance of the sector, bust myths about working in roofing, and showcase the advantages of a construction apprenticeship.

Ruth also gave a reminder that there is a wide range of roles available, across many disciplines, both on and off the tools. The obvious roles are installer related but there are so many more to consider. Options such as working for a roofing supplier, as an estimator or project manager, and all the associated office roles were included.

What’s more, once trained, individuals can become their own boss or choose to be employed. They could work on anything from re-roofing public or even heritage buildings, to installing solar installations on new build housing or large commercial projects. The industry moves at pace with new sustainable roofing initiatives constantly coming to market, providing long-term career pathways.

NFRC’s Ruth Scarrott said: “Apprenticeships need to stop being compared to going to university and stand alone as a valuable gateway to a great career. They are a stable, secure and respected route to a well-paid professional job. Plus, it’s a way to earn while learning, which right now is an especially appealing prospect for many.

“Raising awareness amongst young people, parents and career advisors on the opportunities roofing offers is our priority. More and more resources are now available to offer information and guidance for those considering an apprenticeship. For roofing specifically, the NFRC careers webpage holds a wealth of resources.”

NFRC promotes roofing as a skilled, professional sector within the wider construction industry. It works with employers to help them prepare for apprenticeship opportunities in their business and communicate them in the right places.

NFRC, in partnership with CITB, leads the delivery of a programme that supports new starters through the crucial first six months with their new roofing industry employer. The project offers support in the workplace through job coaching, mentoring, employer engagement, peer and buddy systems, plus other support measures.
