Burnley College and Themis will offer a new Roofing Apprenticeship from January 2027, becoming one of the only providers of its kind in Lancashire.

The programme responds to a national shortage of qualified roofers and gives local employers a fresh route to build the skilled workforce they need.

The course is a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard in Roofing, with two pathways: Slating and Tiling or Flat Roof Membrane Installer. It runs for 24 months and follows a block release attendance model, so apprentices learn in focused periods away from the workplace.

Apprentices will train in a new dedicated workshop and classroom within a purpose-built centre. Cohorts will be kept small, with groups of 10 to 15 learners, allowing close support and hands-on practice throughout the two years.

To join, apprentices must already have an employer placement in place. The college draws learners and employers from within a 30-mile radius.

End-point assessments will take place in college or at an off-site EPAO centre, giving apprentices flexibility in how they complete their final assessment.

Roofing adds to the college’s established Themis construction apprenticeships, which already cover brickwork, plastering, carpentry and joinery, electrical installation, cabinet-making, painting and decorating, upholstery and professional construction. Burnley College holds the title of Construction Apprenticeship Training Provider of the Year and is known for its impressive facilities.

David Lord, Head of Construction at Burnley College, said: “We’re delighted to offer this new pathway. There is national demand for qualified roofers in the industry and, through our training and upskilling, we are directly addressing this gap in the market. It’s a real step forward for the region and for the young people who want to build a career in this trade.”

The programme strengthens Burnley College’s position as a leading construction training provider in Lancashire, adding another future-proofed route for employers and learners alike.

Employers and prospective apprentices who want to find out more can register their interest by emailing construction@burnley.ac.uk.
