WORLD GREEN ROOF DAY on Friday 6 June promises to be a treat for anyone interested in sustainable buildings, biodiversity net gain and the fight against climate change.

The annual event celebrates the many benefits associated with green roofs as well as the developers, architects, planners, suppliers, installers and maintenance crews who continue to help grow this global industry.

Benefits of green roofs include the green habitat they provide for wildlife, the amenity space they provide for humans and their cooling affect in built up centres, reducing the urban heat island effect in cities. Not only that, green roofs can help to slow down rainfall off roofs avoiding drainage systems becoming overwhelmed and flooding.

GRO Skills Card

Ahead of World Green Roof Day, its creators, the Green Roof Organisation, will launch the GRO Skills Card. The card will evidence training that has been undertaken in the Introduction to Green Roofs and further key knowledge areas, and can include Biosolar roofs, Blue Roofs and Maintenance as well as Supervisory and Working at Height modules.

On successful completion of the one-day practical and theory introductory session, and at least one of the additional modules, a GRO Skills Card will be issued to learners. There is the option to go on to complete further modules, as required, which are then added to the GRO Skills Card.

A fast-track route has also been created for experienced green roof installers and professionals, where a GRO Skills Card will be issued on the completion of an evidence-based portfolio and professional discussion interviews. The specialist modules have been created by members of the GRO Training & Education Working Group.
