Flat Roofing Membrane Manufacturer Acquisition of German Leader

FLAT ROOFING membrane manufacturer, Holcim, has revealed its acquisition of German-based roofing membrane manufacturer, Flachdach Technologie GmbH (FDT).

With a 150-year history, FDT has forged a leading reputation for developing Rhenofol PVC and Rhepanol polyisobutylene (PIB) roofing membranes for flat roofs. The company also produces roofing accessories and a solar photovoltaic offer. It also promotes its membranes as the foundation for green roofs.

The company is also a member of RoofCollect, the recycling system for plastic roofing and sealing membranes.

Acquisition of FDT

The acquisition will see FDT join Elevate under Holcim’s business envelope division, expanding its product range for the roofing industry, including UK installers, specifiers and distributors.

The deal follows Holcim’s acquisition of Firestone Building Products in 2021, which now operates under the Elevate brand.

Philip Moors, Managing Director of Elevate UK and Ireland commented: “FDT offers a range of innovative products for flat roofs, which complement the leading EPDM and TPO membranes manufactured by Holcim. These synergies will provide our customers with a complete choice of solutions offering high-performance waterproofing for applications across the commercial, industrial and residential sectors.”

Robert Forster, Managing Director Holcim Solutions and Products EMEA, added: “The acquisition of FDT is in line with our ambition to become a global leader in roofing systems.

“Due to its leadership in technology and sustainability, as well as its strong customer relationships, FDT will play an important role in the expansion into the most attractive European roofing markets.”

In January 2024, Holcim disclosed it aimed to make at least 15-20 acquisition deals this year, and hoped to reach the figure of 30 acquisitions if it could.

Miljan Gutovic, Holcim CEO said the company was interested in acquiring businesses that recycle in Europe. “Europe is aging, our infrastructure is aging. You look at the big EU cities, these cities are becoming big mines,” he said. London alone could generate tens of millions of tons of construction and demolition waste per year.
