MCRMA Response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Final Report

IN A STATEMENT commenting on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s final report, the MCRMA said: “The MCRMA will study the phase 2 Grenfell Inquiry report in detail and, in conjunction with the Construction Products Association (CPA), interpret its findings and make recommendations for members and the metal building envelope sector as a whole.

“The process of gathering such a large amount of information to produce a highly detailed report has been a lengthy process. We recognise the impact that this wait will have had on all those affected by the tragic events of 14 June 2017, as well as tenants and homeowners who live in buildings where remediation work must now be undertaken to make them safe, and we express our sympathy.

“Since the publication of the phase 1 report in 2019, the construction industry has already implemented significant changes to comply with the 2022 Building Safety Act. This means people working in the building envelope sector have already adopted new ways of working within the new safety regime and are familiar with the compliance requirements.

Demonstrating Competence

“One of the key changes driven by the Building Safety Act is the requirement for everyone involved in the delivery of a construction project to demonstrate that they are competent in the decisions they make and the work they do. This is an area in which the MCRMA has been particularly active since 2019, with the association involved in the formation of the JCI (Joint Competence Initiative) and its competency steering groups to support metal roofing and façade installers, as well as those involved in their manufacture and design.

“Accuracy of information was another area highlighted in the phase 1 report and here too we have been actively supporting change. The association assisted the CPA to develop and launch the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI), which will set new standards for competence not just for the metal building envelope sector, but across the construction industry.

“The MCRMA will continue to work closely with the other industry bodies, including the CPA and the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), to help ensure all those working in the metal building envelope supply chain have the support they need to comply with the new legislation and regulations.”
