Read the latest magazine Industry News Russia Excluded by International Roofing Federation in Support of Ukraine 7 March 2022 IN A MOVE to support Ukraine, the International Federation for the Roofing Trade (Internationale Federation des Dachdeckerhandwerk, IFD) has excluded Russia from its membership. In a letter to its 20 international member countries, IFD President Graeme Millar says the move ‘pains’ him, as the organisation has previously worked to establish relationships across the world between roofing industry federations. Russia Excluded However, the decision to exclude the Russian Roofing Federation, called the National Roofing Union, from its ranks was a unanimous one amongst the International Federation for the Roofing Trade (IFD) membership. In total, apart from roofing federations members located in 20 countries, the IFD has 44 corporate members, 6 partners and 7 scientific members – totalling 77 organisations and between them representing a significant proportion of roofing industries across the world. Today’s decision is doubly significant as it reverses the IFD policy of the past 70 years, which the organisation has spent building cooperation and closer links internationally with national roofing communities as diverse as the United States and China. The decision to exclude Russia means that it cannot compete in the World Championship for Young Roofers in St Gallen in Switzerland later this year, in November. The IFD President’s letter reads: To all our Members, Partner Members and Roofers throughout the World, The IFD is not a political organisation and indeed it has built its reputation on friendship between our member nations and the networking opportunities that our annual congresses and technical meetings provide. Our main goal over the last 70 years of the IFD was to improve standards and training in our industry worldwide. I would like to think we have achieved and continue to achieve all of the above. The last two years of the pandemic have been extremely difficult for all of us, but I do see some light at the end of what has been a particularly dark tunnel. Last year’s Congress and Gala awards event in Marburg was the beginning of our physical meetings and it was great to meet up with old friends and colleagues once again. Unfortunately, the last seven days or so have shown a different side to the world as the Russian invasion of Ukraine has increased and to the extent that the people of Ukraine are now leaving their homeland by the hundreds of thousands. This is now a desperate situation. Our General Secretary, Pascal Civati will continue to retain open communication with our Ukrainian Roofing Federation friends as long as it is possible, and we will provide as much support to them as we possibly can given the difficult circumstances. One positive move we can make is to remove the Russian Roofing Federation from our membership. It pains me to have to propose this given our excellent relationship with Elena over many years but collectively the board have unanimously decided that we must support our beleaguered Ukrainian Roofing friends and of course the people of Ukraine as a whole. We have spoken to Elena today and she has accepted our decision albeit she is very sad to leave the IFD. As a result of this decision Russia will not be allowed entries into our World Championships For Young Roofers in St Gallen in Switzerland this November. Yours Sincerely Graeme Millar FIOR, Roofmaster, President of IFD. >>Read more about the IFD in the news Previous article Employers Needed to Offer a Fresh Start to Ex-OffendersNext article Contractor Fined Following Six Site Visits Share article You may also like View all News Industry News +4 2 November 2026 Roofing Merchant Welcomes New Manager to Support Solar Training Careers +3 2 November 2026 Trade Week Initiative Puts Skilled Trades in the Spotlight Health & Safety +2 2 November 2026 Workers ‘Lucky to Escape’ as Unsafe Hot Works Spark Roof Blaze Industry News +1 2 November 2026 Common Assessment Standard Updated to Reflect Regulatory Changes Sign Up to Roofing Today Stay up to date with all of the latest news from Roofing Today by signing up to our weekly Bulletins… Sign Up Today Get in Touch Check out the latest issue 126 September-October 2026 View Now Past Issues Get in Touch
