The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has updated its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework whilst launching a new member app to help members keep up to date with their CPD and professional status.

CPD Framework

The new CPD framework centres on a flexible, outcomes-based approach that enables RICS‘ more than 130,000 members to upskill in essential areas including artificial intelligence, environmental sustainability, and evolving client needs.

Members were consulted globally and it became clear that the pace of change is accelerating, where surveyors increasingly require expertise in technology and legislation that didn’t exist when many qualified – from AI-powered valuation tools to net zero building assessments and climate risk analysis.

RICS says the revised CPD approach aims to uphold professional standards and strengthen accountability by ensuring members can demonstrate how their ongoing learning translates into better service delivery, sound professional judgment, and protection of public interest.

New Member App

Additionally, a new RICS Member App is now available to download for Android and Apple platforms. The app helps members access the tools they need to manage their professional obligations, from logging and tracking CPD to managing their professional profile with a RICS member digital ID and smart reminders sent through their phone.

Christine O’Rourke, RICS Director of Professional Standards, said: “RICS professionals are trusted to give the public and their clients accurate, up-to-date advice, and that trust depends on our members staying current as the industry evolves.

“Whether it’s understanding how climate risks affect property values, applying new regulations, or using emerging technologies responsibly, surveyors need to keep learning throughout their careers – it’s about demonstrating you have the relevant expertise to serve your clients and protect the public properly.

“The response to our consultation showed members understand this responsibility. They want a system that helps them stay sharp and responsive to change, because they know the public deserves nothing less from a chartered professional.”

“The new framework is in effect now, with the member app rolling out to all RICS professionals globally.”
