A RECENT flat roof replacement project on the iconic modernist residence designed by Ernő Goldfinger in 1939 demonstrates Bespoke Asphalt Ltd’s passion for preserving architectural heritage through exceptional roofing craftsmanship.

The project at 2 Willow Road is owned by the National Trust. Designed and lived in by architect Ernő Goldfinger, the property is an historically important example of the British modernist movement that Goldfinger helped to promote after fleeing to the UK in 1939 from Hungary. The architect led modernist inspired post-war design of high rise social housing, instigating the then novel idea of incorporating occupant feedback into design modifications.

Flat roofs are integral to the clean, geometric lines of modernist architecture and this architectural gem required meticulous attention to detail from Bespoke Asphalt Ltd to maintain its historic character while ensuring robust, long-lasting protection from the elements.

A Commitment to Authentic Restoration

Goldfinger’s design emphasized both form and function, with the original mastic asphalt roof playing a key role in the building’s aesthetic and structural identity.

However, after 86 years of exposure, the roof required comprehensive restoration and replacement to reinforce its resilience without compromising its historical integrity.

The Bespoke Asphalt team approached the project with respect and expertise, employing specialized conservation techniques and following the IKO specification to ensure an authentic restoration.

Every phase of the project was carried out with the utmost care and precision. The result is a roof that not only retains the building’s original character but also comes with a robust 20-year guarantee underwritten by IKO; a true testament to the mastic asphalt company’s craftsmanship.

Specialist Techniques and Overcoming Challenges

The project required a nuanced understanding of both traditional and modern roofing methodologies. Each step was carefully executed to meet the highest standards of preservation and performance. Key elements of Bespoke Asphalt’s work included:

  • Dome and Skylight Removal: The team safely removed the original glass domes and Georgian skylights, ensuring all historic features were handled with care.
  • Complete Roof Strip: Removing the aged asphalt, along with the original concrete screed and cork insulation, involved the meticulous extraction of 13 tons of materials. As a tribute to the building’s history, the flat roofers preserved a sample of the original roof, which is now displayed in the site’s museum.
  • Precision Leveling with IKO Permascreed: Addressing historical ponding issues was essential. Bespoke Asphalt applied IKO Permascreed Light Grade Mastic Asphalt to restore the correct drainage falls, using 9 tons of material to ensure long-term water management.
  • Enhanced Insulation with Kingspan Optima R: Upgrading to Kingspan Optima R Insulation improved the building’s thermal performance while maintaining the original upstand height, ensuring compliance with modern regulations without altering the architectural profile.
  • Masterful Asphalt Application: The expert team applied mastic asphalt with exceptional attention to detail, delivering a seamless, weatherproof finish that honours Goldfinger’s vision.
