A collaborative venture between the further education college, the North East Roof Training Group and Samuel Moore Roofing, the roofing apprenticeship training will launch this September 2024. Sam Moore, who heads his family-run business, will be the roofing tutor at the college and is ready to deliver the key skills and behaviours needed in the sector. As an experienced roofer with 17 years’ experience – and the last 10 years as managing director of Samuel Moore Roofing – Sam will combine the role with tutoring and bring up-to-date and employer-focused knowledge to the delivery of the 18-month apprenticeship. Sam said, “As an employer it has been frustrating trying to recruit youngsters into the roofing trade when they can train as a bricklayer or plaster for example much more locally to where they live. “Now, roofing training will be a viable option for all Teeside roofing businesses. Through the roofing apprenticeship at Redcar & Cleveland College new recruits can get a qualification and start a well-paid, lifelong career in roofing.” New Roofing Apprenticeship The Redcar and Cleveland College apprenticeship programme is being delivered in a day release format, one-day per week, which Sam hopes will be more manageable for employers than a set of block-releases. Already recruited are four roofing apprentices and Sam is keen to spread the news of the new local training on offer to more roofing employers in the area. “It’s such great news for the roofing sector in the area,” Sam said. “It means apprentices will no longer have to travel for up to 1.5 hours to be trained – saving time and costs for them and their employers.” Roofing Hub for Industry Roofing rigs are being prepared in the roofing training workshop and CITB are supporting plans to establish the new facility as a roofing hub for the North East area which can be used more widely for upskilling training. Ryan Mitchell, Roofing Manager at Samuel Moore Roofing Ltd said: “Firstly, this is fantastic news for Redcar and Cleveland and the surrounding area. It’s going to empower the next generation of roofers in the Tees Valley. It will grow a stronger talent pool, challenge and bolster the current quality of roofers, provide training opportunities for roofing companies and quality job opportunities for young people in an ever-growing industry. “CITB are also using their links in the area to promote additional commercial roofing training on the site using the rigs. “Additionally, the North East Roof Training Group will be able to utilise the facility for roofing company members who wish to upskill their existing workforce”. Sam added, “We’re dedicated to fostering the next generation of roofing professionals who will uphold the high standards of quality and service that our clients have come to expect. We hope to provide job opportunities to prospective students on the programme. We already have two budding apprentices of our own enrolled.” >> Read more about Redcar and Cleveland College in the news Previous article Views Sought on Heritage Buildings RMI VAT PaymentsNext article School Cuts Energy Bills and Emissions with Roof Refurbishment and Solar Panels Share article You may also like View all News Apprenticeships +4 5 March 2026 BMI Widens Access to Apprentice of the Year Competition Apprenticeships +3 16 February 2026 Roofing Experts Meet Apprentices in Drive to Close Skills Gap Apprenticeships +3 13 February 2026 New Sussex College Roofing Apprenticeship Tackles Skills Shortage Apprenticeships +3 13 February 2026 Construction Apprenticeships See First Increase Since 2021 Sign Up to Roofing Today Stay up to date with all of the latest news from Roofing Today by signing up to our weekly Bulletins… Sign Up Today Get in Touch Check out the latest issue 123 March-April 2026 View Now Past Issues Get in Touch
