BMI Widens Access to Apprentice of the Year Competition

BMI UK & Ireland is now accepting video entries for its annual Apprentice of the Year competition to make the application process more inclusive and flexible.

Applications for the two-day competition opened in February, inviting the next generation of roofing apprentices to apply with either a written or video entry. By offering both options, BMI aims to remove potential barriers to applying and encourage more apprentices to take part.

Up to 20 pitched and flat roofing apprentices will be shortlisted to take part in the July final at the BMI Academy in Gloucestershire. Finalists will be judged on technical ability, teamwork and wider professional skills, including business acumen and presentation.

Flexible Applications

“Apprentices are judged on a wide range of transferable skills alongside their roofing abilities, including collaboration and communication, so it’s important that the application process reflects this,” explained Stuart Farndell, Lead Technical Trainer at BMI Academy.

“By accepting video applications, we hope to encourage apprentices from a broader range of backgrounds to apply. Passion is what really matters, and applicants should be able to show that in whichever format suits them best.”

Entrants must submit answers to a series of questions by 17 April 2026. The winners of both the pitched and flat roofing categories will each receive a £1,000 cash prize, alongside three years of bespoke training at the BMI Academy.

The final will take place on 22-23 July 2026 at the BMI Academy.
