Latest NHBC Standards Published with 2026 Updates

The latest edition of NHBC’s technical Standards has been released.

The NHBC Standards define the technical requirements and performance standards for the design and construction of new homes registered with NHBC. They provide guidance on the requirements to achieve NHBC warranty and insurance.

Updated annually, NHBC’s Standards are reviewed to drive incremental improvement and raise build quality. They support builders and developers to deliver high-quality new homes, with the next edition delivering updates in multiple areas.

Editorial improvements to the numbering of tables and drawings and the cross-referencing between chapters have been made for ease-of-reference. Some building control guidance has been removed to clarify the intended purpose as warranty guidance.

Revisions to NHBC Standards for 2026

There have been several significant changes and updates including:

• Chapter 2.1 – Technical Requirement R3d has been updated

• Chapter 3.2 – guidance on rendering in cold weather has been updated

• Chapter 6.5 – this chapter has been updated to reflect current industry practice and the requirements of BS EN ISO 1461 in relation to galvanising of hot-rolled structural steelwork

• Chapter 6.11 – updated checked rebate drawing and existing guidance strengthened to ensure robust detailing at wall/roof abutments

• Chapter 7.2 – prescriptive requirement for platforms removed and requirement for risk assessment introduced, and requirement for zonal classification of underlays introduced

• Chapter 10.1 – greater clarification given on structural requirements for garage floors and requirement to separate absorbent materials (plasterboard ceilings) from single-skin masonry walls introduced.

This latest edition of the Standards applies to every new home registered with NHBC where the foundations are begun on or after 1 January 2026.
