Get Ready for World Green Roof Day 2026

5 June 2026

Green roofs

World Green Roof Day takes place on 6 June 2026 and promises to be a real treat for anyone interested in sustainable buildings, biodiversity net gain and the fight against climate change.

Created by the Green Roof Organisation (GRO), the event celebrates the architectural design, technology and innovation that enables us to combine engineering and ecology to create habitat and grow plants on top of man-made structures.

Benefits of green roofs include the green habitat they provide for wildlife, the amenity space they provide for humans and their cooling affect in built up centres, reducing the urban heat island effect in cities. Not only that, green roofs can help to slow down rainfall off roofs avoiding drainage systems becoming overwhelmed and flooding.

Get Involved

To help celebrate green roofing, the GRO team is inviting people around the world to get involved:

  • Share your thoughts and experiences of green roofing via blogs and articles
  • Use social media to spread the word about green roofs and their benefits
  • Show us your green roof pictures on social media
  • Search for social media posts about living roofs and share them for others to enjoy
  • Learn more about the benefits of green roofs
  • Download the GRO Code of Best Practice
  • Consider attending a green roof training course
  • Join GRO for regular updates on green roof innovations and case studies
