David Wilson Homes Pins Hopes on TCL for Environmental Award

DAVID WILSON HOMES has appointed landscaping specialist TCL to create wildlife friendly habitats in several of its North West developments, in the hope that it will win them a number of newly created RSPB awards.

The RSPB Wildlife Friendly Gardens scheme is aimed at encouraging house builders to use plants and features to help birds, bees and butterflies.

The RSPB gold, silver and bronze awards mean developers can show off their green credentials to potential buyers.

Developers are awarded points for including features such as planting wildflower turf, scented gardens and beds of cornflower annuals are worth two points apiece, while stretches of native hedgerow earn three points. Water butts, compost bins and physical homes for insects, pollinators and mammals are worth further credits.

TCL Manager, Sophie Kelly, explained: “This new RSPB scheme has added an extra layer of appeal for house builders. Everyone likes to be acknowledged for their achievements and having an award they can display in their sales area and on their literature has got to help enhance their image among the buying public and those living nearby.

“As much of our work revolves around creating attractive sales areas, we need to ensure the elements we create are visually appealing to the customers.

“So while piles of rotting wood and bogs are excellent for the environment they could be off-putting and need to go elsewhere on the site. Compost bins and water butts can be disguised with timber surrounds.

“But of course, bird boxes and beds filled with scented and wild flowers are not only beneficial to the environment – they are also excellent eye candy for everyone visiting the show homes.”
