Construction Law for Subcontractors – How to Avoid Losing Money Workshop

THE NORTH WEST Roof Training Group (NWRTG) is inviting subcontractors to a half-day workshop on the Fundamentals of Construction Law for Subcontractors.

The workshop will take place on Tuesday 19 March and is designed to provide subcontractors with an introduction to fundamental legal principles that are often misunderstood and can lead to construction disputes.

The workshop will be led by Sam Bawden, a partner in the construction division of Holmes & Hills Solicitors, London, who will explain how to avoid common mistakes and misunderstandings that can result in disputes and financial losses. The content will be pitched at an appropriate level, ensuring that delegates receive practical advice that can be applied to live projects.

The workshop will be fully interactive, and attendees are encouraged to ask questions based on real-life scenarios. Bespoke slides and handouts will be available on the day, and the content will be tailored to the attendees’ specific needs and prior knowledge.

Construction Law Workshop

The workshop will cover the following key topics:

  • Background and industry context
  • Relevant contracts and how they are formed
  • Key clauses to focus on, including payment terms, variations, termination, and conditions precedent
  • How to navigate “order of precedence” clauses
  • How to operate your contract, including payment applications, staying on top of the payment process, dealing with conditions precedent, and managing variations and delays on site
  • What to do if you are not being paid on time

The workshop will equip attendees with the tools to reduce the risk profile of contracts they enter into. It will help subcontractors to reduce the risk of disputes and improve their prospects of achieving a favourable outcome if a dispute is unavoidable.

The workshop will take place in Haydock/Birchwood (M6/M62/A580) on Tuesday 19 March and will start at 10.30 am, finishing at approximately 3 pm. A working lunch will be provided.

Members of the North West Roof Training Group will qualify for a discounted rate, and non-members are welcome – please message to confirm availability and cost. Bookings close on Friday 23 February 2024.
