A roofing manufacturer is highlighting the role one of its employees has played in furthering the education and knowledge of roofers during his career.

Permavent is foregrounding how Technical Manager Graham Copson embodies the power of education and apprenticeships in shaping the future of construction.

Graham’s career has spanned 40 years in the roofing and construction industry and he was recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to the Industry at the Pitched Roofing Awards in 2025.

Graham began his career as an apprentice – a three‑year slating and tiling programme that ignited his commitment to continual learning and raising industry standards.

At a time when roofing faces a serious skills shortage, industry bodies warn that without sustained investment in training and young talent, the sector risks long‑term decline.

Educating Roofers

Education has been a constant thread throughout Graham’s career, but his greatest impact comes from openly sharing his knowledge. Graham achieves this by mentoring students and delivering CPDs and college sessions nationwide, helping to equip the next generation with the skills needed to future‑proof the construction industry.

In the past year alone, he has presented to more than 2,000 professionals, apprentices, and students, offering his open, practical approach. Through clear, experience‑based guidance he builds confidence in young roofers and helps them develop safe, effective, high‑quality practices and industry standards.

His philosophy is simple: If we want a strong construction industry tomorrow, we must invest in educating young people today.”

Martyn Halliwell, Permavent Sales Director said, “Graham may not view himself as a traditional leader, but his influence is undeniable. Every hour he spends mentoring and every student he inspires helps build a stronger, more skilled, and future-ready roofing workforce.

“Permavent not only celebrates Graham’s achievements but also recognises the vital role that education and skills development play in securing the future of the construction industry, highlighting the power of apprenticeships to transform careers and strengthen the sector.”
