Stanley-based Hodgson Sayers has strengthened its commitment to the development of young people with the appointment of nine apprentices across its operations.

The new starters join in a variety of roles, including flat roofing, bricklaying, and groundwork, bringing the total number of apprentices currently employed by the company to 13.

Each apprentice is assigned a mentor, ensuring they have guidance, support, and a clear point of contact as they develop their skills. The programme also combines structured, on-the-job training with classroom-based learning at Derwentside College in Consett, giving apprentices the technical and practical knowledge they need to progress and build rewarding, long-term careers in construction.

Cohort of New Apprentices

Hodgson Sayers is primarily a specialist roofing, building maintenance and security products company that operates across the UK from its headquarters in Stanley, County Durham, with a base in Nottingham. It employs a mix of skilled operatives, including contracts managers, joiners, roofers and bricklayers, who service the needs of a diverse client base, the majority of whom operate within the public sector and utilities industries.

Peter Condren, Operations Director at Hodgson Sayers, said: “I always enjoy seeing a new cohort of apprentices join the business. It’s the start of their careers and there’s a real sense of energy and potential in the air. From day one, they are assigned a mentor and begin learning on the job, discovering what it takes to become skilled tradespeople.

“Apprenticeships aren’t just about learning a trade, they’re about problem-solving, teamwork and taking pride in every job. They bring new ideas and up-to-date practices and methods, which help keep the business current and competitive. Investing in their development is also an investment in Hodgson Sayers itself, ensuring we maintain high standards for our clients and securing the company’s longevity.

“Watching these young people grow, develop confidence, start shaping their futures and embed themselves within the company is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.”

Promoting Careers in Construction

Hodgson Sayers works in partnership with North East Museums to support initiatives that promote STEAM learning — Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics — helping to inspire young people to explore careers in construction, engineering, and the built environment.

The regional museums group engages more than 100,000 young people each year through hands-on learning activities, heritage projects and work experience placements. By supporting these initiatives, Hodgson Sayers is helping to foster new talent and opening doors for the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
