BMI Delivers Building Safety Act Workshop for Flat Roofing Contractors

With contractors facing mounting pressure to comply with the Building Safety Act (BSA), BMI UK & Ireland has delivered three regional workshops designed to help flat roofing contractors better understand and demonstrate competence.

The sessions, held across the UK, were developed in response to growing pressure on contractors to comply with the BSA and its supporting legislation.

Rather than focusing solely on legislation, the workshop centred around scenarios, decision-making and the practical steps contractors must take to evidence compliance.

Workshop attendees were encouraged to challenge incorrect information, speak up when tasks fall outside their competence and resist pressure to proceed without all relevant information being available.

Real-World Scenarios

Contractors attending the workshops highlighted the value of discussing real project examples and gaining clarity on their responsibilities and those of other parties involved in their projects.

David Bailey, Director at Brindley Asphalt, said: “The session was highly informative and engaging. It clearly explained the legislation, clarified responsibilities across project roles and used real project scenarios to bring the requirements to life.”

Samantha Baker, Health and Safety Officer at G Baker Roofing Ltd, added: “I found the workshop invaluable for understanding how the new legislation affects us as roofing contractors.

“Being able to discuss real-world scenarios with BMI and other contractors has given me much greater confidence that we can demonstrate our competence and produce the documentation needed to show compliance.”

Building Safety Act Workshops

Through the workshops, BMI says it aims to reinforce the importance of competence boundaries for all staff at every level of a contractor’s business.

Last year’s Apprentice of the Year competition, held at BMI Academy in July 2025, also incorporated a session on the BSA, where attendees learned about individual responsibility, decision-making and the consequences of non-compliance.

Matthew Sexton, Technical and Compliance Director at BMI UK & Ireland, explained: “There is still widespread misunderstanding across the industry about what competence means in practice under the Building Safety Act and supporting legislation. That’s why we’re continuing to invest in education workshops at every level, supporting contractors to create a safer environment for building occupants.”
