Applications are now open for BMI UK & Ireland’s 2026 Apprentice of the Year competition.

Now in its ninth year, the competition spotlights emerging talent, giving apprentices the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and passion, network with industry experts, and compete for a £1,000 cash prize alongside three years of bespoke training at the BMI Academy.

Up to 20 apprentices will be shortlisted to take part in the final at the BMI Academy in Gloucestershire in July.

Over the two-day competition, pitched and flat roofing finalists will be judged on technical ability, teamwork and wider professional skills, including business acumen and presentation. Two winners will be selected – one from each category.

This year’s theme, ‘Adaptable Advantage’, highlights the flexibility roofers need to tackle changing site demands and skill requirements.

With skills shortages continuing across UK trade sectors, apprentices are crucial to the future of construction. Roofing is among the trades most affected, with 19% of roofers predicted to retire in the next 5-10 years. To keep up with demand and meet ambitious government housebuilding targets, supporting and developing new talent will be essential, BMI says.

Last year’s winner of the pitched roofing category, Harrison Davies, explained: “Winning the competition has opened so many doors for me. I’ve learned so much from industry professionals, and the prize money and training will help further my development massively.”

“Apprentices are key to refreshing the industry and addressing long-term skills shortages,” added Fraser Biles, Managing Director at BMI UK & Ireland. “Through the Apprentice of the Year competition, we want to recognise their commitment, invest in their development and help build a more resilient future for roofing.”
