Second Round of Multi Million Heritage Funding Opens

A second round of funding for two major grant schemes, the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund and the Places of Worship Renewal Fund, has been announced by Historic England.

The Heritage at Risk Capital Fund offers up to £60 million, and the Places of Worship Renewal Fund up to £92 million, over the next four years.

Focusing on the most at-risk heritage sites and places of worship, the funding will prioritise high deprivation areas which face the greatest fundraising challenges, and those that bring most community benefit.

Heritage at Risk Capital Fund

The Heritage at Risk Capital Fund supports the repair and conservation of historic buildings and sites at risk across England. Following the successful first year of the fund, which saw £15 million invested in projects across England, up to £60 million remains available for allocation over the next four years, to 2030.

Expressions of Interest can be submitted from 28 August 2026 with applications closing on Friday 18 September 2026.

The Heritage at Risk Capital Fund gives grants for the conservation, repair and conversion of listed buildings of all grades, historic buildings in conservation areas, registered parks and gardens and scheduled monuments.

Grants of up to £1 million are available to organisations or individuals with legal responsibility for the asset.

The Places of Worship Renewal Fund

The Places of Worship Renewal Fund is designed to support urgent repairs and essential improvements to listed places of worship in England. A total of £92 million has been allocated to the fund over a four-year period, with £23 million per annum.

Expressions of Interest for Round 2 of the Places of Worship Renewal Fund are open from 4 September 2026 until the submission deadline on Friday 2 October at 5pm.

Grants ranging from £10,000 to £1,000,000 will be awarded for capital works that keep buildings safe, open and in public use. In order to support different sizes of project, the fund will be divided into three streams. These are:

• £10,000 to £50,000 (small grants)
• £50,001 to £350,000 (medium grants)
• £350,001 to £1,000,000 (large grants)

Any listed place of worship in England can apply, of any faith or denomination, provided it is an active place of worship.

Historic England will distribute the Heritage at Risk Capital Fund and the Places of Worship Renewal Fund. Applicants can submit expressions of interest through Historic England’s website.
