THIS MONTH sees construction workers across the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and 38 other partner schemes, get ready for digital card checks, via the CSCS Smart Check App to gain access to construction sites.

More than 2 million CSCS cardholders with cards that display the CSCS logo will have their details checked using a new CSCS Smart Check app starting in April 2022.

The introduction of the industry-wide digital checks is set to radically improve the construction industry’s card checking procedures and site safety, CSCS says.

To be part of the CSCS card scheme, sector occupations have to set a minimum standard of NVQ Level 2 or equivalent for their charholders, plus a separate health and safety training standard.

Smart Check App

The electronic checking initiative was spearheaded by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC). In 2020, the cross-industry organisation mandated the use of smart card technologies, and called for a common interface to verify CSCS cards.

The CLC said, “By 31 March 2022, all card schemes must use smart technology which has the capability to electronically check agreed information relevant to a cardholder, using a common interface, without the need to manually enter data.”

Last year, the CSCS Alliance set-up a delivery group to oversee the initiative and appointed technology consultancy StableLogic, to procure a new system to deliver on the CLC objective.

Smart Check Roll Out

Now the CSCS Smart Check app is in the final stages of testing ready for roll out later this month. A series of webimars are taking place this month to explain how the app checks can be used and carried out.

CSCS says “The collaborative process represents a blueprint and exemplar for what can be achieved with a shared objective and willingness to raise standards and work together across a complex digital environment.”
