£3.6m Refurbishment Complete for North Yorkshire Railway Station

THE £3.6 MILLION refurbishment of a Grade II* listed railway station on the North Yorkshire coast is now complete.

Built in 1846 by North-Eastern railway architect GT Andrews, Filey Station has welcomed visitors for 180 years.

Refurbishment work included repairs to the station’s lantern roof, extensive glazing and tile work, and adding safe walkways for easier maintenance.

Improvements were also made to the train shed, including two ornate cast iron windows, as well as the station’s café, toilets, and drainage systems.

£3.6m Refurbishment

The project was delivered by Colt Construction Limited following a GGP Consult design on behalf of Network Rail.

Jake Walton, Network Rail Senior Asset Engineer, said: “Seaside stations like Filey hold a special place in the hearts of people from much further afield than their towns – being closely linked to generations of memories of days out.

“We’re delighted to have completed a wide-ranging suite of improvements here at Filey which protect the building as a piece of railway heritage while making the station fit for modern passenger use, and for generations to come.”

Network Rail also worked with partners including the Railway Heritage Trust, which contributed £53,000 towards the restoration of the train shed windows and roofs of ancillary buildings.

Tim Hedley-Jones, Executive Director of the Railway Heritage Trust, commented: “Filey station … retains its original character as a railway station from the first half of the 19th century. We are pleased to have supported Network Rail in their restoration works at the station which, in 2025, is still fulfilling the role for which it was built.”

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, added: “It’s great to see a building with such heritage be looked after to make sure that families and friends can come together on our beautiful coastline for another 180 years.”
