Read the latest magazine Featured Companies Sustainability Video Waste Not, Want Not 23 February 2023 HAMBLESIDE DANELAW, a British manufacturer of roofing ancillaries, is committed to reducing the impact of its operations on the environment and continuing to find ways to recycle waste where possible. The company’s environmental policy covers both day-to-day activities, such as warehousing, distribution, sales and administration, in addition to the manufacturing activities that includes waste management. In 2022, Hambleside Danelaw was granted Carbon Reduce ISO 14064-1 certification which recognises its commitment to reducing carbon emissions from daily practices of the business. Part of this commitment has been to reduce the amount of waste which goes to landfill. The company recycles and reuses all of its in-house polypropylene for tile vent adaptors and other similar products. The next step was to implement a new procedure plan for GRP waste across all three roofing divisions. Recycling Waste with Agecko Established in 2011, Agecko is an innovator in recycling and waste management solutions. After a review of Hambleside Danelaw’s previous practices – Agecko suggested some new processes to implement. All of Hambleside Danelaw’s waste is segregated at source and recycling collectors sourced for each stream, including cardboard, PET Film, LDPE film, GRP waste, wood and metals. The mixed general waste is segregated from the waste GRP offcuts and sent to a processing facility where the commercial waste travels through picking lines at a recycling facility and dry recyclable products (i.e. card, paper, wood, plastics, metal, etc.) are removed and recycled. The segregated GRP waste (fibreglass off-cuts) is baled at Hambleside Danelaw into 600kg mill size bales which are then collected via curtainsider in bulk 18 tonne loads and transported to a Waste to Energy preparation facility in the Northwest of England. The bales are then mechanically opened and go through a shredding process in their journey to becoming RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel). Additionally, the RDF is sometimes refined further using shredders, separators, magnets and dehydration. The RDF is then transported in bulker trucks (25+ tonne loads) and delivered to an ‘Energy from Waste’ plant for processing. Energy from Waste (EfW) is an energy recovery process that generates renewable power in the form of electricity, heat or transport fuels from the controlled incineration of residual waste. This is a fantastic collaboration between Agecko and Hambleside Danelaw, resulting in no waste being sent directly to landfill and allowing GRP waste to generate energy.
