Opened with a Foreword by Russell Blackaller, the professionalism, positivity and good practice of the sector is recognised – amply demonstrated in the outstanding projects explored. From thatching and leadwork to stone slating and lime mortar, there’s something here for everyone who loves traditional roofing crafts. The Resurrection of Christ’s College Roof, Cambridge Russell Blackaller embarks on a tour through history, tradition, and expert craftsmanship, beginning with an appreciation of the re-roofing of Christ’s College with Collyweston slate—an ancient, UK-quarried limestone renowned for its beauty and durability. Celebrating the traditional skills of the Claude N Smith roofers and leadworker Greg Lane, Russell’s visit to the Collyweston slate mine includes the meticulous process of quarrying, frost-splitting, and laying this historic material. Case Study: Thomas Rotherham College This case study documents the comprehensive roof replacement to preserve the building’s Victorian character while meeting modern standards. As principal contractor, NRA Roofing installed 30,500 Cwt Y Bugail Welsh slates covering 500m2. The project, supplied through AcuRoof, part of SIG Roofing, faced challenges to preserving historical features, logistical constraints of working within an operational school, and managing multiple trades. The roofing work is a masterclass of craftsmanship, conservation, and modern roofing best practice.
