Read the latest magazine Industry News Roof Slate The Great British Slate Off Gets Underway 11 November 2021 THE NFRC Great British Bake Off competition is taking place between 9-11 November 2021 at the Centre of Roofing Excellence in Hereford. The competition sees slaters arriving with their tutors from colleges across the UK to compete head-to-head for over six hours. The student slaters contestants have already taken part in competition heats at their colleges. While they are scrutinised completing the slating task according to a defined specification, the college tutors in attendance will be recreating a slate poppy originally designed by judge, Matt Timby to mark Remembrance Day on 11 November. Joining Matt Timby as judge is a second roofing expert, Bob Coutts. Bob and Matt have years of experience having previously judged and taken part in the international IFD World Championship for Young Roofers, and the Skillbuild roofing competition. Great British Slate Off Prizes The winner of the Great British Slate Off will be awarded the Mason-Elliott Award by the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers and be invited to their annual Craft Awards Luncheon in London next year. The slating champion will also be considered for the 2022 IFD World Championship for Young Roofers team. In addition, CUPA PIZARRAS are providing an all-expenses-paid trip to Spain for the winner and their tutor to visit one of the company’s quarries. Lastly, the Lead Sheet Training Academy (LSTA) if offering a free City & Guilds Traditional Basic Lead Work Craft course. Industry Support The Great British Slate Off is being supported by Cupa Pizarras, DuPont Tyvek, Hambleside Danelaw, SR Timber, LSTA, Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers. The competition was launched this year by the NFRC due to roof slating and tiling not being included in this year’s SkillBuild. The industry still wanted to give young people a chance to compete and so organised the Great British Slate Off competition as an alternative.
