SRT Gold batten installed on the sheltered housing project

SR Timber’s SRT Gold® graded roofing battens were recently selected for the re-roof of three blocks of sheltered housing flats for Harlow Council.

Specialist roofing contractor Ashton Roofing & Maintenance Ltd installed the re-roof, replacing the battens to support new fibre-cement slates across a 2000m² pitched roof area.

Sheltered Housing Re-roof

The project involved installing new roofs and vertical slate cladding on three blocks of flats at The Mercers, in Harlow, Essex. The existing fibre-cement slate coverings had reached the end of their serviceable life, and the buildings had suffered from persistent leaks over many years.

The specification for this re-roofing project required a like-for-like replacement of the existing fibre cement slate, so the new slate product had to match the original covering’s aesthetic and performance profile.

The principal contractor, Chas Berger, and Ashton Roofing worked with the SIG Roofing branch in Kentish Town to finalise the specification and supply all roofing materials for the job. All materials were covered by the SIG Roofing One Warranty system, providing 15 years’ cover against manufacturing defects.

SR Timber SRT GOLD® graded roofing battens were selected for all the pitched roofing areas of the project. The SRT Gold graded roofing batten is compliant with all relevant codes of practice: BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 and BS 8517:2011+A1:2014 (preservation of wood). It is a WPA-approved product, Use Class 2, and a CCPI-assessed product 005300068/0628, and is now available with a published EPD too.

Michael Ashton, Founder of Ashton Roofing & Maintenance, commented: “We were very happy with the quality of the SRT GOLD® batten supplied by SIG Roofing. We endeavour to use graded roofing batten on our projects. The straightness of the batten makes the installation easier, and knowing it has passed the quality tests gives us the confidence it will be durable enough to support the slates for many years to come.”
