Winners The winners of the 2023 SPRA Awards are: Best Detailing 2022, sponsored by Protan (UK) Ltd Winner: Invictus Roofing Ltd working with Protan (UK) Ltd Project: Valley Drive To achieve the sharp aesthetic of the originally specified zinc roof and ensure that it was ventilated sufficiently, Invictus Roofing designed and fabricated custom eaves, ridge and valley details using galvanised- and membrane-laminated steel sheets. Mock standing seam profiles were set out and welded precisely, while brick chimneys were detailed using traditional lead-style step flashings. Best Detailing 2022, Valley Drive Best Small Project 2022, sponsored by Recticel Insulation UK Ltd Winner: Sika Limited working with Enviroply Roofing Ltd Project: Cleavley Community Forest Garden The green roof system designed, donated, and installed free-of-charge by Sika and Enviroply Roofing created an insulated, waterproof space for use by the local community. Wildflower planting integrated the new structure with the surrounding garden. Health, safety, and logistical challenges were managed to protect those on site and ensure that the project finished on time. Best Small Project 2022, Cleavley Community Forest Garden Best Refurbishment 2022, sponsored by SFS Group Fastening Technology Limited Winner: Bauder Limited working with Central Roofing and Building Services Limited Project: Smart Systems Ltd Overlaying the existing >12,000m² roof prevented 140 skips’ worth of expanded polystyrene waste from being sent to landfill. A Bauder single ply roofing system was specified to provide a flexible, flame-free solution. The project was managed to minimise disruption to daily operations; prevent water ingress; and protect the health and safety of those working underneath. Best Refurbishment 2022, Smart Systems Ltd Health and Safety Award 2022, sponsored by Sika Limited Winner: Procladd (Small Works) Limited working with Sika Limited Project: Balerno High School Procladd (Small Works) refurbished fourteen roof areas – totalling 7,500m² – while the school remained open during exam season. To protect the health and safety of students, scaffolding was fenced off and vehicles remained stationary during school hours. The existing roofs’ woodwool slabs demanded the installation of an adhered single ply roofing system, occasionally disrupted by snowstorms. Health and Safety Award 2022, Balerno High School Sustainability Award 2022, sponsored by Building Systems UK, a Tata Steel enterprise Winner: Sika Limited working with Enviroply Roofing Ltd Project: Cleavley Community Forest Garden Two disused shipping containers were repurposed for a local community group to host workshops that help to tackle social isolation. A biodiverse green roof – including Sika’s Cradle to Cradle Silver certified, mechanically fastened single ply membrane – added thermal insulation; created a habitat for local flora; and reduced rainwater run-off in an area prone to flooding. Sustainability Award 2022, Cleavley Community Forest Garden Best New Build 2022, sponsored by EJOT UK Limited Winner: Invictus Roofing Ltd working with Danosa UK Ltd Project: Bellingham Mews The pitched roofs of this development make a feature of the single ply roofing system installed by Invictus Roofing, enhanced by mock standing seam profiles.
