THE SINGLE PLY SECTOR came together to explore the theme of risk at the Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) annual Conference and Awards on Thursday 13th June at Heythrop Park, Oxfordshire.

Suzannah Nichol, CEO of Build UK

The Conference featured several high-profile speakers, including David Smith, Economics Editor at the Sunday Times who discussed the economic landscape, likely near-term political developments and Brexit consequences. Suzannah Nichol, CEO of Build UK called for a simplification and clarity of construction standards, and the Get It Right initiative set up to work collaboratively towards zero defects in construction was discussed by John Taylor, MD of TR Control Solutions.

Richard Millar NFRC

NFRC’s Richard Millar gave an update on the roofing accreditation scheme, RoofCert, and Peter Caplehorn, CEO of the Construction Products Association discussed progress in accurately representing construction products post-Hackitt and the role of LEXiCON in sharing product data consistently, while the BBA’s certification process was explained by Simon Wroe.

The talks were completed by Nigel Blacklock, SPRA Technical Chair and Technical Director of Bauder. Nigel explained how the imminent results of the Part B Building Regulation review will be critical to single ply and insulation manufacturers and installers.

Dr Ronan Brunton, SPRA Technical Manager rounded up the theme of the conference with a summary of the risks and opportunities facing the single ply sector.

The Conference was followed by the SPRA Awards 2019 which recognised outstanding workmanship in several categories as well as innovation and sustainability. The Awards were presented during a celebratory dinner, followed by entertainment and drinks.
