Saint-Gobain to Launch its First Stone Wool Production Line in Spain

SAINT-GOBAIN is to launch a €40 million stone wool production line at its insulation plant in Azuqueca, near Madrid, Spain.

The investment will expand and decarbonize the stone wool production line at the factory. The upgrade will include the installation of an electric furnace to replace the current one that runs on fossil fuels.

The Azuqueca plant will be Saint-Gobain Group’s first facility to feature an electric stone wool production line. The new installations are expected to be operational in the first half of 2026.

Stone Wool Production

The modernization will increase stone wool production capacity by approximately 40%, meeting growing Spanish demand for sustainable construction materials. At the same time, the project will enable the plant to reduce its CO2 emissions by 70% (scope 1 and 2) compared to 2017 levels.

The Azuqueca plant benefits from a zero-carbon electricity supply thanks to a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed in 2022 with ENDESA, ensuring the supply of green electricity until 2034 for a total volume of 150 GWh.

The investment allows Saint-Gobain to strengthen its range of insulation solutions. It is part of Saint-Gobain’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 across scopes 1, 2, and 3.

Saint-Gobain is a €47.9 bn turnover global group owning household brands such as British Gypsum, GCP Applied Technologies, Isover and PAM St Gobain.
