Once again, Roofing Today brings you the Top 30 UK Roofing Contractors. Hugely popular in previous years, this year’s list will benchmark pre-pandemic roofing company performance.

Ranked by turnover, data is provided by Plimsoll Publishing, experts in business performance and industry analysis.

THE TOP SPOT continues to be bagged by Avonside consolidating its position for a second year, with only Mitie Tilley Roofing giving way to FK Facades in the first five ranking.

With an average turnover approaching £27 million, interestingly the total sales for our Top 30 remain almost constant, matching last year’s list at almost £900 million.

Overall, sales growth on the previous year remains positive with an average rise of 9%. About a third have seen static or reduced sales values, up from a fifth in last year’s list, reflecting the slight hardening of conditions in 2019.

Total pre-tax profit is also down on last year’s list with 13 businesses seeing a reduction, albeit the average has increased from just over £1million to £1.5 million suggesting a more polarised list.

The average profit margin is 6.37% with half the list operating at under that figure.

Leaner Sector

The notable reduction in employee numbers from last year’s 3,314 to 2,696 this year suggests a leaner sector. This might reflect the greater representation of flat roofing and cladding businesses in this Top 30 with an associated tendency to use subcontracted labour.

Threats of a second covid wave, no deal Brexit and climate crisis will demand roofing businesses remain adaptable and fleet of foot to navigate what promises to continue to be dynamic times ahead.
