HOWARD EVANS ROOFING recently completed the mastic asphalt works at the Hindu Balaji Temple in Oldbury. Over the last 12 months, the firm has completed two phases of work, the most recent project involving the remediation of two stairwell roofs.

SPV Special Projects, part of Howard Evans Roofing and the winning contractor for the project, was tasked with stripping off the temple’s old felt roof consisting of failed torch on felt, OSB tongue and groove boards which had perished, as well as polystyrene boards and vapour barrier.

The project involved SPV installing one layer of sheathing felt to the concrete substrate, followed by laying IKO permascreed asphalt to falls. A 140 powerdeck insulation with a 50mm infill asphalt to the surrounding perimeter was then installed, and the gutter system was incorporated to ensure there was no standing water. Two coats of mastic asphalt were supplied and laid to all flat areas. Primer and eml were then applied and fixed into the concrete vertical perimeter, followed by three coats of mastic asphalt to all uprights. Mastic asphalt fillets were then installed to finish.

Finally, two coats of white solar reflective coating were applied, which will future-proof the works, offering the temple a long-term solution to its previous issues.

SPV Special Projects’ roofer, Luke Maginnis, worked on the Balaji Temple project. Luke comes from a family of mastic asphalters and has won several awards with SPV for his mastic asphalt projects, including the NFRC Roofing Award 2021 for St Antony’s College, Oxford, and the IKO Contractor Recognition Award 2021.

Kate Whatley, SPV Special Projects Manager, said: “Luke takes exceptional pride in his work and every job he does is first class. He really is a credit to himself and SPV.”

To ensure mastic asphalt is sustained in the industry, Luke is currently training apprentices, and has recently started a Roof Training Group assessor course, headed by Denise Cherry from the Yorkshire Independent Roof Training Group, in order to pass on his expertise to the next generation.
