KEY FINDINGS of research published by Marley show that nearly one in five homeowners have focused on roofing work, while one in ten have invested in an extension, since the pandemic.

The research of 2,000 adults, who were homeowners, tenants and some specifiers, aims to help navigate emerging long-term trends accelerated by the pandemic, balanced with sustainability and Net Zero targets for energy efficient homes.

The whitepaper report, called Raising the roof: Homes and communities in a post-covid UK discusses the importance of green space and community, while acknowledging the conflicting pressures of local planning priorities, affordable housing development and lack of investment in corresponding infrastructure from developers avoiding the impact on their profits.

Sustainability appears to have popular support according to the report but lacks a coherent Government strategy. In practice architects are commonly applying a Fabric First approach and tend towards over specifying insulation.

Jo Sims, Marketing Manager for Marley, says: “This research adds important and relevant insight to the ongoing debate concerning the long-term fallout from the once-in-a-generation event the country and the world has experienced.  Many have been reassessing how they live their lives, how they want to use their homes, as well as establishing stronger views on the local community in which they have been forced to spend more time since March 2020.

“Add in consumer contributions about what support they want to have from government and their opinions on the importance of sustainability investment for the home, and it is clear that the findings are highly relevant for the architectural and specification sectors looking to meet demand with appropriate housing.”
