Reroof of Grade II Manchester Mill Underway

The reroof of the Grade II* listed Crimble Mill in Heywood, Manchester is currently underway.

The reroof is part of a larger multi-million pound refurbishment project to turn the former textile mill into 33 apartments and commercial space, with 31 new build homes to be built around the mill and a further 150 units on the neighbouring greenfield site.

Dating back to 1825, the mill is said to be the last large-scale water powered rural mill to survive in Greater Manchester. Before being picked up for renovation, the building remained in a state of disrepair; the roof was leaking and upper levels were decaying.

Grade II Reroof Underway

Joe Bennett, a roofer specialising in slate and flagstone roofs is taking on the reroof solo. As the mill is a listed building, the new roof must be restored as closely to the original as possible. To do this, Joe will use as many reclaimed slates as possible from the original roof. The estimated number of slates used on the roof is 200,000 – a huge task for just one man.

First started in January 2025, the project is expected to last between nine and twelve months, depending on the weather, with a completion date in spring 2026.
