Kate Whatley comments: “International Women’s Day always makes me pause and look around at the people who have shaped my journey. In the roofing industry, this year’s theme ‘Give to Gain’ feels especially true. “Our work depends on collaboration, fairness, and the willingness to lift each other up, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by people at Raise the Roof who embody those values every single day. The Power of Giving in a Tough Industry “Roofing isn’t always an easy path,” continues Kate, who is the director of Phoenix Consortia, specialist roofing and cladding firm. “It demands resilience, confidence, and the courage to step into spaces where women haven’t always been visible. But what makes the journey not just possible, but meaningful, is the community around us. When we give our time, our knowledge, and our support, we don’t lose anything—we gain stronger teams, better outcomes, and a more inclusive industry. The Women Who Have Lifted Me “I’m grateful for so many supportive individuals—far too many to list—but there are a few in Raise the Roof who have had a huge impact on my career and support me whenever needed: Denise Cherry, whose steadiness and wisdom have guided me more times than she knows. Ginny Brown, who shows what true collaboration looks like and reminds me that fairness isn’t just a value, it’s a practice. Sam Jones, whose knowledge, professionalism and encouragement and partnership have helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. Livia Williams- Who believed in me before I did! “These women, along with countless others, have shown me that success in this industry isn’t about standing alone—it’s about standing together.” Collaboration, Support, and Fairness “Roofing thrives on teamwork,” says Kate. “Every project, every challenge, every breakthrough is the result of people choosing to work side by side. When we prioritise fairness, when we share opportunities, when we support each other’s growth, we create an industry where everyone—regardless of gender—can thrive. “Give to Gain isn’t just a theme. It’s a reminder that generosity builds stronger foundations than competition ever could.” Moving Forward Together “As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I’m proud to be part of a Raise the Roof which prioritises learning, evolving, and opening doors for the next generation. And I’m proud to keep giving—because everything I’ve gained has come from the people who gave to me.” >> Read more about Raise the Roof in the news Previous article New Chair for Green Roof Organisation as Board ReaffirmedNext article SIG plc Reports Flat Revenue but Higher Operating Profit for 2025 Share article You may also like View all News Health & Safety +3 10 October 2026 Employers Urged to Take Action This World Mental Health Day Apprenticeships +3 9 October 2026 National Construction College Scotland Hosts Swedish Delegation Industry News +1 9 October 2026 NFRC Launches All-New Personalised Member Portal Check out the latest issue 126 September-October 2026 View Now Past Issues Get in Touch Sign Up to Roofing Today Stay up to date with all of the latest news from Roofing Today by signing up to our weekly Bulletins… Sign Up Today Get in Touch
