NFRC Services to Industry Award for RTA Chair’s Work on Roof Tiling Guide

PAUL LYTHGOE was presented with an NFRC Services to Industry Award on 14 January 2025.

Paul received the award at the formal launch of the Design and Installation Guide for Roof Tiling held at the NFRC’s headquarters in London.

Presented by NFRC Head of Technical and Training, Bob Richardson, the award was given to Paul for his work in collating all the information published in the Design and Installation Guide for Roof Tiling and preparing it for print. This was a colossal task undertaken over a period of three years.

Roof Tiling Guide

The guide was written by a team of experts from the Roof Tile Association (RTA) and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC). It involved assembling all the sources of technical information and standards for pitched tile roofs and bringing them into one comprehensive guide.

The result is a comprehensive and up-to-date guide for roof tiling which will be an essential reference for all roofers from apprentice tilers to experienced professionals.

Retiring as managing director of RTA member Tudor Roof Tiles, Paul Lythgoe has assumed the Chair of the Roof Tile Association.

Paul said, “I hope the Guide will help all roofers, whether they are just starting at the outset of their careers or are more experienced roofers, to carry out their day-to-day roofing activities with the certainty that they are getting everything right.

“We hope roofers will keep the Guide with them and if they are in doubt they can check a design detail or the best installation approach to meet the relevant standards.”

Alex Patrick-Smith, Chair of Dreadnought Tiles and Ketley Brick, and former chair of the RTA added, “There’s a lot of duplication and references to standards that have evolved in all the technical references. When NFRC and RTA came together to amalgamate all this different information into one coherent whole, we didn’t realise what a challenge that was going to be!

“I think it’s a testament to the team that worked on it, that came together regularly to edit sections of the book, and all credit to them that this Guide is something I think we can all be proud of.”
