New Roof Owner Fined for Flouting Building Regs

A HOMEOWNER was fined for flouting building regulations at her property in Coventry after she failed to obtain approval.

The property owner had already pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the Building Regulations at Coventry Magistrates Court in May. She also admitted failing to provide information requested by Coventry City Council about one of her properties.

The property was visited in 2024 by council inspectors after they were informed a new roof had been fitted. It had been installed without prior approval, which is an offence under the Building Act 1984.

The court heard that Coventry City Council had served a Requisition for Information (RFI) Notice under the Local Government Act 1976. It provided the property owner with information on how to comply with regulations which were ignored. The court imposed a fine of £756 on the homeowner.

Warning that the Council intends to target people breaking building laws in Coventry, Cllr Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader at Coventry City Council, said: “If you do not follow the building control procedures set out for handling your building work or you carry out building work which does not comply with the requirements contained in the Building Regulations, Coventry City Council will not hesitate to prosecute those who choose to ignore their legal obligations.”

Kate Rich, Head of Building Control for Coventry City Council, added: “Regulations are crucial for ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of building occupants and visitors, as well as tackling causes and consequences of climate change.”
