Future Homes and Buildings Standards whitepaper

A new report designed to help specifiers, developers, and contractors understand upcoming Building Regulations and prepare for changes to energy efficiency requirements has been published by insulation and waterproofing manufacturer SOPREMA.

The Future Homes and Buildings Standards Whitepaper explains key updates and how the construction industry can meet them as the UK works towards its 2050 net-zero targets.

Preparing Industry

Buildings and product use account for approximately 22% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to space heating and hot water generation. To meet legally binding net-zero targets, upcoming updates to the Building Regulations Part L and Part F in England will require new dwellings to be zero-carbon in use. New regulations will come into force in March 2027, and non-compliant buildings could risk higher operational costs and expensive future retrofits.

The whitepaper aims to help support design strategies from the beginning of a project. It walks through the regulatory compliance of the updated Part L and Part F of the Building Regulations, transition timelines and target metrics, including the transition from SAP to the Home Energy Model (HEM), airtightness targets, and mandatory on-site renewable energy generation. It also provides strategies for managing heat loss and optimising building fabric U-values.

Mike Vaczi, Technical Director at SOPREMA UK, said: “Achieving zero-carbon in use performance isn’t an optional extra; it’s a fundamental requirement for the future of the built environment. Our goal is to give specifiers, developers and contractors the practical tools they need to meet the regulations.

“This new whitepaper highlights the balanced approach needed for specification for the Future Homes and Buildings Standards to deliver high thermal and airtightness performance without compromising structural space or indoor air quality.”
