THE UK‘s first ‘motionless’ wind energy system is being trialled on the roof of BMW’s Mini car factory.

The motionlesss wind energy system uses wind power to produce clean energy without visible moving parts. The low-impact technology trial developed by Aeromine Technologies will be a testbed to assess its potential for installation across UK commercial building rooftops, as well as BMW Group sites globally.

It’s part of the BMW Startup Garage, a programme supporting early-stage startups working on innovative technologies.

Rooftop Trials

Aeromine Technologies’ wind energy unitAeromine Technologies’ wind energy unit is installed on the edge of the Mini building towards the prevailing wind. The unit has wing-like vertical airfoils that create a vacuum effect, drawing air behind an internal propeller to generate clean electricity.

The bladeless design minimises noise and vibrations, ensuring no disturbance to buildings or the surrounding environment and with minimal impact on avian wildlife.

It is designed to complement existing solar arrays which are less effective during winter and evening hours, when wind conditions are often strongest. This is when Aeromine’s wind energy unit can step in and continue generating renewable energy.

Urs Sambale at BMW Group Real Estate Europe, said: “This pilot is a small but exciting project for BMW Group and complements our existing approach to purchasing renewable electricity from the national grid. We’re looking forward to seeing its potential for generating clean wind energy at BMW Group sites.”
