Membership Opens to the Bitumen Flat Roofing Association

The Bitumen Flat Roofing Association (BFRA) has opened membership for 2026–2027, inviting organisations from across the reinforced bitumen membrane (RBM) sector to get involved and help shape the future of flat roofing.

The move marks a significant step forward for the BFRA, following its formation and a year focused on establishing governance, technical direction and industry presence.

Those joining will gain access to the latest technical guidance and resources, including the forthcoming BFRA Design Guide, which is currently in development and set to become a key reference point for RBM systems.

Members will also be able to stay ahead of changes to UK and European regulations and standards, an increasingly important consideration in today’s compliance-driven environment, says the organisation.

Beyond this, the BFRA is positioning itself as a collaborative platform. Members will have the opportunity to help shape training initiatives, contribute to technical resources, and influence industry events. There is also a strong emphasis on networking – bringing together different parts of the supply chain to share knowledge, address challenges and drive consistency across the sector.

Shaun Lotay, Chair of the BFRA, said: “The association is expanding its reach to create a more representative voice for the sector, as membership offers a range of practical and strategic benefits. At its core, BFRA membership is about raising standards and strengthening recognition for reinforced bitumen membrane systems within the wider construction landscape.

“We’re delighted to be opening membership to the wider flat roofing sector and we encourage manufacturers, contractors and affiliated product suppliers to get in touch if they’d like to hear more information about what membership could offer.”

Their support during the initial establishment period was critical.”

Industry Experience

BFRA is led by a board with significant industry experience. Shaun Lotay serves as Chair, supported by Phillip Wilcox-Moore, Managing Director of Axter, who acts as Secretary, and Richard Aldred, Head of Compliance and Technical Services at Sika, who is Vice Chair. Together, the board has focused on building the BFRA with a clear sense of purpose, underpinned by technical credibility and a commitment to collaboration.

Since its launch in 2024, the BFRA has worked to address a longstanding gap in the sector – creating a dedicated body focused specifically on bitumen flat roofing. Key initiatives include the development of its technical committee and ongoing work on the BFRA Design Guide, which will provide a unified and up-to-date benchmark for materials, applications and design.

As the association looks ahead, its focus is on expanding its influence, aligning with key industry challenges such as competency and sustainability, and ensuring its members are well represented in an evolving regulatory landscape shaped by the Building Safety Act.
