Read the latest magazine Health & Safety Industry News Members of New Industry Competence Committee Confirmed 9 August 2023 MEMBERS of the new Industry Competence Committee (ICC), part of the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) set up by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), have been announced. The committee will oversee the delivery of construction and building safety changes advised in the Hackitt Review following the Grenfell Fire. The 16-member committee will begin meeting in September to improve competence across the construction industry and monitor the delivery of the new building safety regime, which the BSR expects will be operating fully by April 2024. Industry Competence Committee Members The interim committee’s Chair, Jon Vanstone, 50, has been confirmed as permanent Chair. He is a former director of RoofCERT, Trustmark and Fensa. He remains a director of Tech Influence, Trade Association Forum Ltd, CERTASS Ltd (Competent Person Schemes) and the National Home Improvement Council. Other members of the ICC include: Jay Parmar, Chief Executive of the Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry and chair of the CSCS Alliance, the card scheme for construction site workers. Lorraine Turner, Accreditation Director at the UK Accreditation Service Steve Evans, Head of Technical Operations at the National House Building Council Lorna Stimpson, Chief Executive of Local Authority Building Control. Wendy Belfield, Commercial Director at InTandem Systems, a building energy management systems controls specialist. Pete Dawber, owner and consultant at Solvere an education and CPD course development company. Ruth Devine, Managing Director at SJD Associates, an electrical design and maintenance company. Richard Harral, Technical Director at the Chartered Association of Building Engineers. Andrew Bulmer, Chief Executive of the Property Institute representing the property management sector. Anthony Taylor, Chair of the Building Safety Alliance representing 100 organisations involved in the occupied residential property sector. Kate Milford, Director at Milford and Marah, a consultancy on delivering strategy into practice. Fire specialists have also been appointed to the committee. They include: Nick Coombe, Head of the Protection Policy Reform Unit at the National Fire Chiefs Council. Dennis Davis, Vice-Chair of the Fire Sector Federation Alasdair Perry, Chief Executive of the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association James McNay, Director of Fire Safety for Scotland at Hydrock The ICC will have a key role in improving the competence of people working in the construction industry. It will work with stakeholders and industry leaders to help deliver progress on competence. Building Safety Regulator The Building Safety Regulator is reportedly recruiting an additional 160 workers to form a more than 400-strong workforce. From October, the BSR will become the building control authority for multi-occupied high-rise buildings in England.
