Kemper System, LRWA Awards 2023

A ‘UNIQUE’ REFURBISHMENT PROJECT using a liquid waterproofing solution from Kemper System, has been highly commended in the Liquid Roofing Project of the Year under 1000 sq. m category at this year’s LRWA Awards.

The Gala Fairydean Rovers FC’s Netherdale Stand in Galashiels, Scotland, is a Category A listed building. The stand underwent a £1.45m major revamp of concrete repairs to protect its heritage for the team and its fans.

The complexity of this project scored highly amongst LRWA Award judges, as a total of 600 sq. m of Kemperol 2K-PUR cold-applied polyurethane liquid membrane was chosen to provide a durable solution for the essential repair works.

The 500-capacity stand has several verticals forming part of the structure’s unusual concrete design, and was a complex installation for the contractors, made more challenging by restricted site access.

Speaking of the award recognition, Victoria Ramwell, commercial manager at Kemper System, said: “We are delighted to be highly commended in this award category. We were up against some tough competition, but are pleased that the hard work and dedication of the team at Kemper System, and contractors, has been recognised.

“The complexity of the project is quite deceiving until you see the aerial pictures of the unusual structure of the stand’s roof. Nothing other than liquid applied waterproofing would have been suitable for a project like this, and Kemper System’s versatile qualities and durability meant a successful refurbishment was delivered.”

Kemper System’s 2K-PUR solution is the only cold liquid-applied wet-on-wet waterproofing product in the UK which is sustainably sourced, solvent-free and completely odourless. Approved contractors, Concrete Repairs Ltd (CRL), applied the solution directly onto the concrete substrate, using a reinforcement fleece in-between applications to ensure consistency.

Manufactured using an 80 per cent castor-oil formula derived from sustainable sources, Kemper’s 2K-PUR liquid system bonds directly to the substrate forming a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate and is UV stable.

Originally designed by renowned architect, Peter Womersley, the Gala Fairydean Rovers FC’s Netherdale Stand first opened in 1965. It was an early example of shuttered concrete being used to create a gravity-defying cantilevered canopy, and this refurbishment has generated worldwide interest within the modernist architectural movement.
