ROOFING CONTRACTOR Hodgson Sayers has reported a growing national presence in the past 12 months with higher revenue and profits.

The company, which supplies and installs security, metalwork and fabrication and civils, as well as roofing, says it is winning a range of contracts outside of its North East heartland.

John Sayers, Managing Director, says this would be pleasing in any year but in the context of the challenges faced as a result of the pandemic, and other pressures currently impacting the wider economy, the financial performance of the business has given the senior management team “great confidence for the future”.

The company has seen steady growth since 2016 when it opened another office in Nottingham. Now it has gained extensive contracts across the Midlands with clients such as Nottingham City Homes and South Holland District Council, as well as work in London, the South East and South West.

Hodgson Sayers Growing

Recent growth has meant Hodgson Sayers posted a dramatic rise in turnover, which totalled £11.53 million for 2021, an increase of 34% over the £8.6 million achieved in 2020 and 5% higher than the £10.97 million revenue in 2019 pre-pandemic.

Likewise, Hodgson Sayers’ operating profit was £259,118 in 2021, a big improvement over its loss of -£29k in 2020. The company says it is budgeting for the same rate of improvement in 2022 and this year’s first quarter results bear out expectations.

John Sayers, Managing Director, said, “The quality of our work and commitment to customer service is being rewarded with our placement on a number of social housing frameworks across the UK and the further our reach goes the more we are developing relationships with new prospects that we are confident will turn into live opportunities.

“While the senior team can plan and provide strategic direction, the success of our business is, as always, down to the commitment and determination of every one of our team. From the administrative department to stores and through to the frontline trades, it is our people that drive our future and our success.”

John says the pandemic forced innovation in the business is leading to productivity and efficiency gains and solutions driving carbon reduction across the business.

The company has also benefitted from the recent construction boom with “exceptional demand” from its traditional customer base in the public sector.

Now the challenge is for the firm to keep up an almost constant need for recruitment across all trades and it is planning to restart its apprenticeship programme.
