GARLAND UK has achieved carbon neutrality across its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, reinforcing its commitment to responsible operations and supporting clients in delivering more sustainable building projects.

The announcement follows two years of data collection and targeted reduction measures detailed in Garland UK’s 2024 Sustainability Report and Carbon Reduction Plan. Verified Gold Standard offsets were used to balance the small amount of unavoidable operational emissions remaining after measurable reductions across energy, logistics and waste.

In 2024, Garland UK achieved a 7% overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and maintained zero waste to landfill for the second consecutive year. The company also cut total waste by almost 20% and increased recyclables to 24% through improved segregation and packaging. Electricity is now 100% REGO-backed, and gas includes a renewable and offset component verified by the Carbon Trust.

Mark Fisher, General Manager at Garland UK said, “Reaching carbon neutrality for our operations is a proud moment for everyone at Garland UK and an important step for our clients too. We’re proving that responsibility and performance can go hand in hand, and that sustainability strengthens the long-term value of every project we support.”

Carbon Neutrality

The Gold Standard credits used to balance residual emissions support a solar lighting project in Zambia, delivering renewable energy access to off-grid communities. The initiative was chosen by Garland UK’s employee-owners through a companywide vote.

Garland UK’s journey to carbon neutrality is rooted in measurable progress. The company has upgraded its offices and warehouse facilities with energy-efficient LED lighting, improved transport efficiency through sustainable freight partnerships, and introduced recyclable packaging and product innovations supported by independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These actions not only reduce Garland UK’s own footprint but also help clients to evidence sustainability credentials in line with public procurement and ESG requirements.

Charlotte Fenwick, Sustainability Lead, added, “This milestone strengthens the value we deliver to clients. When a Garland system is specified, they’re partnering with a company that is actively reducing its carbon impact and operating to transparent, verifiable standards. We see sustainability as a shared journey where every improvement we make contributes to the collective progress of the industry.”

Sustainability Targets

Garland UK’s near-term target is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% by 2032, based on its 2023 baseline year, with a long-term ambition to achieve a 90% absolute reduction across all three scopes by 2050. The company will continue to focus on freight decarbonisation, material transparency, and waste prevention to help clients meet rising environmental expectations.

As a 100% employee-owned company, Garland UK continues to embed sustainability across its business operations and supply chain, ensuring progress is data-driven, transparent, and aligned with its culture of responsibility.
