First Building Envelope Professionals Approved as MCRI Members

The new institute of excellence launched for individuals working throughout the metal roofing and cladding supply chain has approved its first members.

The MCRI – the Metal Cladding & Roofing Institute – was developed by the MCRMA to ensure the skills, competence, specialisms and value of those working within the UK’s metal building envelope sector can be formally recognised and promoted more widely.

In addition to those working in metal roofing and cladding projects, the institute also represents individuals involved in rainscreen, self-supported metal, such as lead and copper, and roof and floor decking projects which use metal deck profiles.

First MCRI Members Approved

Following its recent launch, the MCRI has now approved its first members, and the institute says it is anticipating steady membership growth over the coming months given the strong early interest from people working at all levels and in all roles across the sector.

Carlton Jones, Director of the MCRI, comments: “One of the main objectives of the institute is to give more recognition to industry professionals whose work often goes on out of the limelight, but it is absolutely critical to the success of products and projects.

“That’s why it is so encouraging to see applications for membership from people in such a diverse range of roles, reflective of the complete metal building envelope supply chain, spanning everything from product development and testing and system manufacturing through to roof and façade design, specialist technical services, sales and maintenance.”

Important Step

Amongst the earliest MCRI members is Ben Morris, a technical manager for a roofing and cladding consultancy which specialises in design calculations. He works with everyone from main contractors and specialist sub-contractors to system manufacturers and fastener suppliers.

Commenting on his decision to become a member of the MCRI, Ben said: “I’m pleased to share that I am now a Member of the Metal Cladding & Roofing Institute. Joining the MCRI represents an important step in continuing to develop my technical knowledge and staying aligned with best practice across the UK’s building envelope industry. Not only that, but I also think the MCRI provides an excellent platform for industry professionals by recognising competence, knowledge and specialism and the acknowledgement of expertise.”

Ben’s views are echoed by one of the other early members, Peter Gilbert. As a field service engineer for a major systems manufacturer, he works closely with roofing and façade installers, including by conducting on-site inspections, providing training and technical support on product specification.

Peter said: “I’m genuinely delighted to join the MCRI. This membership means a great deal to me personally, as it recognises the years I’ve dedicated to improving roofing and cladding standards across our industry. Being part of the MCRI community gives me the opportunity to keep learning, share my experience, and continue pushing for quality, safety, and professionalism in every project I’m involved in.”

Join the MCRI

As its membership grows, the MCRI is working to expand the resources available to members, particularly through its CPD training modules spanning design, installation and maintenance of metal cladding and roofing.

With its focus on individuals, being a member can be beneficial to industry professionals who are looking to develop their skills and knowledge, not only to support their career development, but also to ensure they can demonstrate that they are competent to perform their role.
