CSCS Ends Recognition of Fall Protection Courses

21 March 2022

Fall Protection

CSCS is to withdraw recognition of the Kee Safety and HCL Personal Fall Protection Installer Permanent Solution courses from Friday 29th April, 2022.

The decision means applicants who apply for these courses after this date will not gain their requested CSCS card.

Existing cardholders will be able to continue to renew their cards. This change affects new applications only.

Fall Protection Courses Recognition
The Kee Safety and HCL courses have been replaced with the Apprenticeship Standard for Fall Arrest Technician which is offered by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

Applicants registered to complete the apprenticeship will be able to apply for the CSCS Apprentice card and upon completion of the apprenticeship, they will then gain the CSCS Advanced Craft card.

However, the Institute website says that currently there is no end-point assessment organisation (EPAO) in place. It means that candidates cannot be assessed once they have finished their apprenticeship.

The Institute says starts on the apprenticeship will only be possible once a suitable EPAO has given an ‘in principle’ commitment to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to deliver assessments on this apprenticeship standard.

Only once the ‘in principle’ commitment has been approved by ESFA, funding for apprentice starts will be permitted.

Fall Protection Vital to Industry
Fall protection installer training is critical for the roofing industry, ensuring the safety of roofers and maintenance personnel when accessing roof areas. It is also vital for many other sectors that need to access and work at height. For example, energy, infrastructure, commercial, industrial, entertainment, retail and agricultural.

Permanent fall protection and arrest systems are found on numerous public and private buildings across the UK. In addition to commercial and industrial applications.
